- SkyTrac has added a new product to its portfolio of Satellite Communication (SatCom) and flight following systems. Leveraging technology from SkyTrac’s field-proven ISAT transceiver, the new “DSAT” is a portable unit that is lighter, smaller and less expensive. The DSAT is well suited to organizations that need reliable satellite-based flight following to comply with government Automatic Flight Following (AFF) requirements. The DSAT exceeds both U.S. and Canadian AFF specifications. The DSAT contains a data-only Iridium transceiver, a built-in Global Positioning System (GPS), and a built-in long-life battery that allows it to be flown without aircraft power. The battery will function for eight hours at a continuous position-reporting interval of two minutes. With DSAT, this level of portability is offered in an “avionics grade” package with accompanying levels of reliability and durability that are well beyond consumer grade electronics. The DSAT is designed to provide flight following, to send predefined (or “canned”) short messages, and to receive short, free form messages. As a portable unit, the DSAT is not typically subject to the same certification requirements as a permanently installed system. DSAT data is transmitted and processed by the Iridium and SkyTrac networks, which offer the highest levels of reliability, security and customer support. With DSAT, SkyTrac offers a fixed rate per flight hour pricing plan option—Kelowna, British Columbia
