From the Daily Trust in Abuja and the allAfrica.com news website we learn of a second Nigeria satellite plan. Named NX2, this space vehicle is going to be designed and manufactured by Nigerian engineers. In fact, it appears as though NX2 will launch with NigeriaSat-2 during Q4 of 2009. This is according to the Minister of Science and Technology for Nigeria, Chief Grace Ekpiwhre, during a recent visit she made to Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) in the United Kingdom to assess the development on both projects.
She also made assurances to the 25 engineers at the Surrey location that the Federal Government will sustain their training program. Called Know-How-Technical-Training, the engineers will acquire advanced knowledge in space technology as well as skill acquisition to take delivery of the NigeriaSat-2 spacecraft, manage the vehicle and then build out their own, indigenous satellites. SSTL has already completed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for the 300 kg NigeriaSat-2. Next step is the Critical Design Review (CDR), which should finalize the spacecraft’s design. The CDR will be followed by a full manufacturing effort—Surrey, United Kingdom
