From the Hindu Business Line online news service, we learn that VXL Technologies is now set to manufacture terminals to be installed on fishing boats along the coastline of India. The order for the terminals comes from the Space Application Center (SAC) in India after successful water trials. The first 100 terminals are expected next month and they’ll be delivered to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and SAC.
The terminals communicate via satellite and route information to a central hub located at the Coast Guard Region (East) in Chennai. According to a senior space scientist with SAC, the hub provides continuous monitoring and will initiate a quick response to any boat needing rescue assistance. Different terminal switches will indicate the type of emergency, from medial to fire or to a boat sinking. This information was made public during the 58th International Astronautical Congress in Hyderabad, India.
