Newtec’s Standards...Solutions For Evolution In Satellite @ IBC 2013

[SatNews]  “This year will be a turning point in the emergence of UHDTV.”

Newtec is shaping the future of satellite communications with state-of-the-art products and scalable, integrated solutions for broadcast, broadband access and backbone and trunking applications.

With its R&D and relationship with the European Space Agency (ESA), Newtec remains a strong presence in technological development while continuing the pioneering contributions that have led to industry standards including DVB, DVB-S2, DVB-RCS and iSatTV Cenelec pr EN50478.

Newtec’s worldwide customer base includes the industry’s most prestigious broadcasters, satellite operators, telcos, systems houses and broadcasting unions. Established in 1985 and headquartered in Belgium, Newtec has regional offices as well as additional R&D centers located in Stamford, Connecticut (U.S.), Singapore (Singapore), Beijing (China), Dubai (UAE), São Paulo (Brazil), Berlin (Germany) and France.

Newtec has carried out an extensive industry survey to gauge the temperature of the sector as DVB makes plans to roll-out extensions to the existing DVB-S2 standard at the end of the summer. The results come as a number of new standards are entering the market for quality (UHDTV 4K/8K), compression (HEVC) and satellite transmission (S2 Extensions).

The full survey results, based on over 700 respondents from more than 400 satellite companies, will be available at a special Future Network Technologies panel being hosted by Newtec on the third day of IBC.

Executives from leading players within the satellite industry will all participate at the free event hosted by Newtec.

Thomas Van Den Driessche, VP Market Strategy at Newtec

Thomas Van Den Driessche, VP Market Strategy at Newtec will be speaking at IBC on Monday September 16 15:30-17:00 at Video Delivery Media: Wherever Next

“We are at a remarkable crossroad for the entire satellite industry, as new standards are being launched representing the biggest evolution for more than a decade. Broadcasters and telcos now have a once in a cycle opportunity to implement new standardized technologies and drive transmission efficiency ever closer to the theoretical maximum.

For businesses within the satellite sector this brings the cost down yet further and allows for more and better quality content and even healthier profit margins. HEVC and S2 Extensions are arriving just in time for 4K.”

Steven Soenens, Director, Product Strategy and Product Management at Newtec
“This year will be a turning point in the emergence of UHDTV. Not only is the availability of 4K/8K content deterministic to the speed of adoption, also the network infrastructure needs to be ready to transport the higher bitrate streams with optimal availability. Satellite is the medium of choice to adapt to new video formats and expand throughput in a quick and cost-efficient manner.

As a consequence we have seen almost all 4K and 8K transmissions taking place using satellite transmissions. But we’re not there yet, the next step in the process is to optimize our satellite capacity usage to the new services, this is where a more efficient DVB-Sx modulation plays an important role. But not only is the physical layer efficiency critical, managing the available bandwidth in an efficient manner for a magnitude of different services (OTT, SD, HD,  up to UHDTV) is increasingly higher on the agenda of many broadcasters.”
