On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, small satellite manufacturer GomSpace A/S and King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

The non-binding framework agreement establishes a collaborative baseline to explore joint small satellite missions, advanced space technology research, and technical workforce development within the Kingdom.
Dual 8U Spacecraft Architecture and Technical Scope
The strategic agreement outlines plans to design and deploy a dual 8U Earth Observation (EO) satellite mission engineered to test advanced remote sensing payloads and optical communications hardware.
Key technical parameters of the proposed academic-industrial partnership include:
- Lifecycle Mission Engineering: Encompasses system architecture design, mission concept formulation, and Assembly, Integration, and Test (AIT) workflows.
- Optical Communications Demonstration: Evaluates space-to-ground optical laser communication downlinks alongside multispectral Earth observation sensors.
- In-Country Capacity Building: Integrates KFUPM academics, researchers, and engineering students directly into flight-hardware development processes to build localized space technology expertise.
Saudi Vision 2030 Alignment and Industrial Growth
The partnership supports Saudi Arabia’s strategic initiatives under Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the national economy and expand sovereign high-technology manufacturing. Collaborative research will be spearheaded by KFUPM’s Interdisciplinary Research Center for Aviation and Space Exploration (IRC-ASE).
The agreement aligns with GomSpace’s expansion across Middle Eastern commercial and government space markets, following a strategic turn toward volume manufacturing and serialized satellite platform kits.

Project implementation, hardware procurement schedules, and operational responsibilities for the dual 8U satellite mission will be formalized under separate commercial and technical agreements as system architecture studies progress.
