On May 11, 2026, Abu Dhabi-based Space42 and Silicon Valley’s Skylo Technologies announced a strategic partnership to launch standards-based direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity. The service will be delivered via the Thuraya-4 geostationary satellite, utilizing Skylo’s 3GPP-compliant non-terrestrial network (NTN) platform to enable seamless mobile-satellite convergence for standard consumer and industrial devices.

Advancing Carrier-Grade Mobile-Satellite Convergence
The technical integration between Skylo’s network and the Thuraya-4 satellite is complete, highlighted by a successful demonstration of a bi-directional, real-time voice call. Crucially, the system functions without modified SIM cards or changes to existing terrestrial mobile operator core infrastructure. For telecommunications carriers, this provides a “plug-and-play” extension of their networks into rural, maritime, and remote regions where terrestrial coverage is unavailable.
The partnership leverages 3GPP standards, allowing satellites to function as a natural extension of global mobile networks rather than a parallel, proprietary system. This “Standardized Sky” architecture ensures that devices can authenticate through existing identity frameworks, preserving the relationship between the mobile network operator and the end user while expanding the operational footprint across more than 37 countries.
Thuraya-4 Infrastructure and Technical Capabilities
The service utilizes the Thuraya-4 Next-Generation System (NGS), which was launched by SpaceX on January 3, 2025. Built on the Airbus Eurostar Neo platform, the satellite features a massive 12-meter L-band antenna and advanced on-board processing capabilities.
- Spacecraft Platform: All-electric Airbus Eurostar Neo.
- Capacity: On-board processing for up to 3,200 channels with dynamic power allocation.
- Frequency: L-band spectrum optimized for mobility and D2D connectivity.
- Footprint: Extensive coverage across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia.
Strategic Impact of the Space42 Merger
The D2D initiative is one of the first major service rollouts following the October 2024 merger of Bayanat and Yahsat to form Space42. The combined entity integrates Yahsat’s established satellite communications fleet with Bayanat’s AI-powered geospatial analytics, creating a vertically integrated “SpaceTech” champion.
“This partnership advances Space42’s strategy to become a global NTN leader, extending Thuraya-4’s reach through an interoperable connectivity layer that enables satellite and terrestrial networks to function as one unified system,” said Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Space Services at Space42. “The impact is immediately meaningful for the people and communities who depend on reliable connectivity.”
Timeline for Global Commercial Deployment
Following the completion of technical validation, Space42 and Skylo are currently securing the necessary regulatory approvals and operator agreements across their target markets. Commercial deployment is expected to begin on a rolling basis throughout 2026 as clearances are obtained. The rollout will prioritize mission-critical connectivity for governments and enterprises, alongside mass-market consumer safety features for mobile users in underserved regions.
