Novaspace, the space consulting and market intelligence firm, has released its Space Situational and Domain Awareness Market Intelligence Report.
“With the increasing deployment of mega-constellations in lower orbits, critical failures and collision events are becoming a matter of when rather than if,” said Alessandro Cattaneo, Consultant at Novaspace and lead author of its newly released report. “The entire space economy now relies on situational awareness data to support sustainable orbital activities.”
As satellite traffic and collision risk increases, so does the need for accurate data. Novaspace projects that global investment in Space Situational and Domain Awareness (SSDA) will reach $6.2 billion (€5.4bn) by 2030, up from $4.8 billion in 2024. The increase in spending will be driven by the need to manage assets in increasingly congested orbits, as well as the growing demand for intelligence and space domain data in contested and dual-use environments.
Some 95 percent of SSDA investments will come from government programmes, underscoring the role of institutional initiatives as the foundation for SSDA data. Nevertheless, a vibrant and expanding commercial ecosystem is emerging alongside these efforts, aiming to offer advanced, precise and cost-competitive solutions.
Over the next decade, a total of $56 billion is expected to be invested globally to generate SSDA data and services. This figure reflects heightened urgency across the space sector to mitigate collision risk and ensure operational continuity. Proving how SSDA capabilities are quickly becoming a core pillar of the space economy — key to preventing collisions, protecting satellite infrastructure, and enabling long-term mission success in space.
