ESA’s Education Office has recently opened the calls for applications from university students to attend 2 online training sessions of ESA Academy’s Training and Learning Programme in February-March 2022: the Online Ladybird Guide to Spacecraft Communications Training Course 2022 and the Online Technology Transfer, Application and Innovation Workshop 2022.
Online Ladybird Guide to Spacecraft Communications Training Course 2022
This training course consists of formal lectures with lots of interaction with the students and is provided by an ESA Engineer belonging to the Advanced Mission Concepts and Management Support Office of the Mission Operations Department of ESOC, the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. He relays real stories of operations engineers battling wayward spacecraft – sometimes winning and sometimes losing. The way communications systems are designed can have a crucial impact on how they are used and on what problems can occur.
The students learn about ESA’s European space Security and Education Centre (ESEC) and the activities performed on site, including Galileo and PROBA spacecraft’s operations.
At the end of the training course, the students have a solid understanding of the challenges of communicating with a spacecraft and the subsystems involved in communications (both on-board and on the ground): what can go wrong, troubleshooting, and traps to be avoided during operations and testing.

Open to: Bachelor, Master or PhD students studying an engineering subject.

Online Technology Transfer, Application and Innovation Workshop 2022
During this workshop, the university students are introduced to the different disciplines related to Technology Transfer, Applications and Innovation. Students learn about various domains such as patenting, technology transfer and applications, and entrepreneurships. These lectures are complemented by a case study based on an actual ESA patent. The students implement their newly gained knowledge to help ESA to find a suitable application, working on a simplified business plan proposal in group assignments.

Open to: Bachelor (at least 3rd year), Master or PhD students studying engineering or science subjects and Master or PhD students studying a business administration subject.
