Harmonic… announced 4:2:2 decoding capabilities for its ProView™ 7100 integrated receiver-decoder (IRD), transcoder, and stream processor. Leveraging this powerful new capability, the IRD’s SD and HD decoder can support 4:2:2 compressed video streams in both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC 8/10-bit formats, enabling content and service providers to deliver the professional video quality required for contribution applications.

By integrating 4:2:2 decoding for DVB-S/S2, IP, and DVB-ASI input interfaces into the ProView 7100, Harmonic allows content providers to cost-effectively decode SD and HD content presented as either MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC compressed streams with improved picture fidelity.

The ProView 7100 supports a variety of contribution and distribution applications, including single-channel decoding, MPEG-4 AVC-to-MPEG-2 transcoding, and DVB descrambling. With the capability to perform multiformat video decoding, descrambling and remultiplexing of up to four transport streams, as well as transcoding for up to eight channels, the multifunctional platform dramatically lowers a broadcaster’s operational expenses.

Mariner… announced a major milestone in the growth of its innovative, award-winning flagship product. Mariner xVu™ is now monitoring more than seven million devices, making Mariner xVu a global market leader in the IPTV industry.

Mariner xVu has been supporting the Microsoft® Mediaroom® environment since 2009 and has recently announced support for the new functionality in Microsoft Mediaroom client 2.2. Other ecosystems supported include Cisco Videoscape, ViaAccess-Orca (RiGHTv and Compass), and Minerva iTVFusion.  The solution currently monitors three of the top five service providers in North America.

According to findings from Point Topic and the Broadband Forum, the number of IPTV subscribers grew by 3.8 million globally in Q1 of 2012, ranking as one of the biggest quarters ever for IPTV growth. Mariner has increased the number of devices monitored by that number in the same time period, demonstrating that it can keep pace with the rate of growth of the IPTV industry and the unrelenting need to monitor subscriber Quality of Experience (QoE). Additionally, the rapid adoption of IPTV is further substantiated by research numbers — provided by Digital TV Research — that predict global IPTV subscribers Learn more about the company’s products here. Visit Mariner at stand 14.521.

Media Links… introduces a high performance IP. The widespread use of IP for the transmission of uncompressed video and audio in contribution circuits has presented several problems that arise from the point-to-point structure of IP. This presents problems if signals need to be distributed to several locations simultaneously. Solutions to date have involved the use of either large quantities of transmission equipment, or the very unsatisfactory use of multicast transmission making hitless switching impossible,

The Media Links MD8000-CHP-RHS card resolves these issues to produce what is effectively a distribution amplifier for IP systems. One card can process up to 16 streams simultaneously, all to dual redundant pairs, and provide hitless switching between pairs. Or, it can be configured to take a single stream and send it to 16 dual redundant outputs.

This “distribution mode” is likely to have a significant impact on system design, where multiple simultaneous IP deliveries are required. For example with major sporting events where contribution circuits may need to be delivered to multiple users, and because the system uses hitless switching, it provides a very high degree of reliability, and quality of service.

The MD8000-CHP-RHS card is one of a family of IP processing cards designed to enhance the functionality of the MD8000 system. The MD8000 frame allows for the integration of receiver, routing and transmission operations within one operating area, under a single control system for maximum efficiency. The MD8000 system has found widespread use around the world wherever the highest performance parameters are sought.

Miranda Technologies… announced the installation of its iControl advanced content monitoring and control platform at Encompass Digital Media Limited (EDML) in London.

Encompass provides playout and origination services for cable channels, television station owners and operators, sports leagues, civilian government and military sectors. In addition, Encompass offers distribution, master control and content management services. The company recently invested in new, state-of-the-art technical facilities at its Stephen Street, London location to enhance its quality of service to clients.

Miranda’s iControl is a highly advanced signal and facility monitoring system that enables operators to instantly review the status of their entire facility and quickly detect, diagnose and initiate repair of any problems that arise. This results in operational efficiencies while simultaneously ensuring a higher Quality of Experience for viewers.

The monitoring, alarm status and control solution is operated via iControl GUI touch screens. The touch screens provide configurable alternate views to any one of four operational, or two engineering, positions to monitor and control channels running through the facility’s multiple transmission chains. Audio is a significant component for EDML as its plays out multi-language and subtitling services, also monitored and controlled with iControl. EDML currently provides origination and transmission services for 60 channels, and the facility is designed to scale to over 200.

EDML utilizes Miranda’s Densité LGK cards, a channel branding processor that provides iControl GUIs with a thumbnail view of all content passing through the system. In addition to Miranda’s array of software and services, the NVISION router, Kaleido X16 and Kaleido IP multiviewers play an important role in EDMLs playout workflow.

Thomson Broadcast… announces the APS RF synthesizer system for use with AM and DRM radio transmitters. The system replaces the Thomson transmitter’s RF synthesizer and includes an adaptive precorrection feature that automatically compensates for changing amplifier characteristics. APS enables: broadcasters who send high-power signals to improve transmission quality, thereby increasing coverage in the area of reception and enabling them to broadcast higher data rates or higher audio bit rates:helps the operator ensure that the broadcast chain is always tuned for optimum transmission by automatically compensating transmission limitations in the high-power stage of the amplifier system: automatically adapts to changes in the transmission chain and readjusts each time the transmitter is starting the broadcast program: no manual tuning is required: in cases where different antennas are available, the transmitter will automatically compensate the difference and adjust the effect on the broadcasting transmitter.

Other important features of the new APS system include: ripple compensation on the transmission bandwidth, which results in passband-ripple of less than 0.1dB; analog audio transmission improvement in terms of linearity and frequency response, resulting in an improved transmission chain; better digital audio transmission in terms of MER and spectral purity; short-term training modus using RF feedback signals; and fast signal processing for the test-signal and the correction filter system.
