COM DEV International Ltd. (TSX: CDV) has announced a space-based AIS (Alarm Indication Signal) payload, launched on a dedicated satellite on April 28th, has validated the advanced space-based AIS performance capability, which COM DEV has developed. The system is providing comprehensive advanced AIS data which enables a level of global vessel detection unachievable by any other known space-based system. The trial has validated COM DEV‘s predicted performance levels over large coverage areas. The data collected is also being used to validate vessel traffic densities and to characterize any potential interference sources. This data will enable the design and development of an optimized system for global coverage. COM DEV is currently engaged in conducting technical briefings to define an optimized system solution which will meet the operational requirements of various companies, based on the demonstrated advanced AIS capability. In parallel, Gatehouse has developed a capability to incorporate the space-based AIS data into the Gatehouse AIS System, thereby offering an AIS infrastructure capability which seamlessly integrates AIS from space. Gatehouse AIS applications are now made available with support for AIS from space. Most notably these include applications related to maritime safety, surveillance, environmental protection and vessel traffic management and planning—Cambridge, Ontario
