digiCREATION—Blackmagic Design‘s new Multibridge Pro and Workgroup Videohub were an integral part of the online workflow for “Fields of Fuel,” winner of “The Audience Award: Documentary” at Sundance 2008. The Blackmagic Design Multibridge Pro is the world’s first external PCI Express capture and playback solution that instantly switches between SD, HD and 2K, in 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 video quality. The product connects to PC or Mac computers with high speed 10 Gb/s PCI Express, or use independently as a bi-directional SDI video converter. The Blackmagic Design Multibridge Pro is compatible with a wide range of video software including Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Fusion, Photoshop and many others. Co-producers and online editors, Darius Fisher, founder of DNA, and Todd Sali, founder of thesandbox, worked on Mac Pro 3.0 Ghz systems at thesandbox, using the new Multibridge Pro for capture and layback. Additionally, they used a Boland 42-inch LCD and a Teranex VC300 x4-fc-2 converter. The brain of their Xsan was a G5 and they used a G-Speed XL to handle the large storage requirements of the wide variety of video formats. Color correction and motion graphics were done at the DNA facility on a Mac Pro with a Multibridge Pro and another Boland 26” LCD running Apple Color. All the hardware — computers, drives, monitors – were routed through the Workgroup Videohub, an industrial strength routing switcher that eliminates complicated manual cable patching by connecting everyone together into a fully featured professional routing switcher. It automatically switches between standard definition SDI and high definition SDI with full 12×24 routing and deck control.

digiCREATION—Available this month from Panasonic is their compact line of LUMIX digital cameras. This is the FS-Series, and includes the DMC-FS3, which features 8.1 megapixels, a f2.8 Leica DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens, 3x optical zoom, and Panasonic’s Intelligent Auto Mode. The DMC-FS3 features a new image-processing LSI, the Venus Engine IV, which contains a more advanced signal processing technology for rendering higher-quality images and produces a faster response time. The camera also offers a new Intelligent LCD—the 2.5-inch LCD screen detects the lighting condition and controls the brightness level to offer optimal clarity in any situation, whether dark or light; indoors or outdoors. Intelligent Auto Mode consists of the following: MEGA O.I.S., gyrosensors that detect hand-shake and the lens system shifts to compensate, helping to prevent hand-shake from creating a blurry image—Intelligent ISO, which can determine if the photo subject is moving and change the ISO setting and shutter speed accordingly, thus giving a blur-free photo—Intelligent Scene Selector, which senses the ambient conditions, recognizes the shooting environment and will automatically select the appropriate scene mode from: Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode—Face Detection, which can detect as many as 15 faces anywhere in the frame, even if they are moving, and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure settings so portraits come out clear and crisp—Quick AF, an auto focus system that starts to focus on the picture subject by the user simply pointing the camera to the subject, minimizing the AF time. The DMC-FS3, available in blue, pink, green, silver and black models, will be available in February 2008.

digiDELIVERY—Hewlett Packard has debuted a new family of entry-level disk arrays with enterprise-class features to assist customers in more effectively centralizing storage to lower costs, increase administrator efficiency and reduce business downtime. The HP StorageWorks 2000 Modular Smart Array (MSA2000) family is composed of low-cost Fibre Channel and iSCSI disk arrays for highly available, storage area networks (SAN) that is designed for virtualized server environments. These systems are designed for small and mid-size businesses, however, enterprises also will find the MSA2000 is an ideal solution for their remote office, departmental, secondary and tertiary storage needs. The MSA2000 arrays are easily deployed in physical or virtual server environments to deliver an available and automated infrastructure. The modular arrays also support a wide range of application deployments, including VMware virtualization software. The MSA2000 enables customers to increase disk utilization by deploying any combination of SAS or SATA drives to achieve an ideal mix of price, reliability and performance to support their business. Both the iSCSI and Fibre Channel MSA2000 arrays complement the HP BladeSystem and feature a built-in management console to set up and configure the storage without additional hardware and software. This enables HP BladeSystem customers to easily fit the MSA2000 into their current management environment and configure all their blades at once instead of one blade at a time. General availability is expected this March.

Talk about upsetting the apple cart… eBay is becoming even more PC…now, if you don’t like the actions of an eBay buyer, TOUGH! There’s no outlet for your anger! No longer can you leave negative feedback on any cretinous activity from a buyer you’ve suffered when making an auction sale from this once-awesome service. In fact, you may no longer even leave NEUTRAL comments regarding a buyer… not a good move, eBay. Expect this to hurt usage. - The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) has filed a patent infringement suit versus Intel. WARF believes the Intel Core 2 Duo processors’ Smart Memory Access feature is a “mirror” of Wisconsin scientists’ invention that was developed a decade ago. A permanent injunction has been sought to restrain Intel from selling the Core 2 Duo processors… if such is applied, Apple could be in big trouble, as their current computer lineup is totally dependent upon these processors.
- Could be, but no guarantees… before March rushes in, Apple may well media and analysts to a gathering wherein new innovations will be revealed. The target date could be the 26th of February, with rumor running amok product to be displayed COULD include Penryn-based MacBook Pros with inclusions such as multi-touch trackpads, a software development kit (SDK) for the iPhone and more, such as a new Safari 3.1 browser which will allow users to download and instantly render non-standard web fonts. You might be delighted to know HTML boxes may be rotated, scaled, skewed and translated in real time. Mix in some HTML5 support for SQL APIs, video and audio tags for rich scripting that will include playback controls and the browser competition continues to heat up. Oh, and, just so you’ll know, Apple is going to bypass NAB this year—no booth, no presence…
