Satcom World Africa 2008 will be in its 11th year running the only conference aimed at the VSAT, mobile and broadcasting sectors of satellite communications. Scheduled for April 7th through 10th at the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa, Satcom prides itself in having prestigious and informative speakers. The next conference will be no exception with the participation of Sami Al Basheer Al Morshid, Director of the ITU-D Switzerland as a keynote speaker. Satcom 2008 also sees the launch of the Satellite Star Awards, an awards evening aimed at acknowledging and paying tribute to people and organizations who have excelled in the industry. The nominees for the various awards categories will be judged by five industry key figures, namely, David Hartshorn of GVF, Geoff Daniel of Geoff Daniel Communications, Russel Southwood of Balancing Act, Greg Francis of Access Partnership, and Mike Ings of The University of Cape Town.
“For the first time in history, Africa has begun to seize control of its communications destiny by deploying locally-owned satellites,” said David Hartshorn, Secretary General of GVF. “While this is an extremely important step, a stronger dialogue is needed to ensure that the African user community and communications industry collaborate on current and future bandwidth solutions.” Mr. Hartshorn is also a featured columnist in SatMagazine
