“The $20 Billion Question: Can Satellite and Terrestrial Wireless Co-Exist in C-band?” Now, that’s a query to ponder! To help us ponder’ize and capitalize on others’ expertise, the GVF Satellite Summit will wade into this issue at The Waldorf Hilton in Aldwych, London, on September 24th from 9:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. This Executive Summit, organized by GVF, will address an issue of unprecedented importance: Do terrestrial-wireless deployments represent a major commercial opportunity for the satellite industry – building upon the lucrative GSM backhaul business with Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, IMT 2000, 4G and other rollouts – or do next-generation terrestrial-wireless interests pose a threat to the success of the satellite sector? Or both?
Throughout the world, fixed and mobile satellite services are being severely disrupted by interference from new Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) services operating in the “extended” C-band frequencies. Further, there is an effort underway by the terrestrial-wireless industry for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to replace satellite services with future mobile phone networks like IMT advanced and 4G services in “standard” C-band frequencies.
Even as the market demands GSM-backhaul and hybrid satellite services, terrestrial-wireless interests will be attempting to influence this outcome in October/November 2007 during the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) in Geneva. These frequencies are a primary means by which the satellite industry provides millions of users with mission-critical communications solutions not only for enterprise, but also for distance learning, universal access, disaster recovery, and many other vital applications.
GVF invites you to participate in this Executive Summit, which is being held in coordination with VSAT 2007, as well as organizations such as the European Satellite Operators Association, the Satellite Action Plan-Regulatory Working Group, the Asia Pacific Satellite Communications Council, the Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia, Mobile Satellite Users Association, Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association, Satellite Industry Association, Society of Satellite Professionals International, Satellite Users Interference Reduction Group, VSAT Services Association of India, and the World Teleport Association.
