The Hartinger Medal is presented annually to the person selected by NDIA Rocky Mountain Chapter members to the individual who has made a significant contribution to the military space mission of the United States. From the Los Angeles Air Force Base, Lt. Gen. Michael Hemel, Space and Missile Systems Center commander, was the recipient this year at the National Defense Industrial Association Rocky Mountain Chapter Ball in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Under General Hamel’s leadership, SMC recently had its 51st successful space launch in a row. This is a feat unparalleled in military space history!
General Hemel is the center’s commander and also the Air Force Program Executive Officer for space. In that role, he leads more than 6,800 personnel and manages more than $60 billion in contracts. He also played a role in the creation of global positioning satellites and has also overseen the advance of global missile warning systems. The General said, “I am very honored to receive this award but am even more pleased to share it with all the men and women of SMC, the birthplace of military space.” The Hartinger Medal is named for General James V. Hartinger, the first commander of Air Force Space Command.
