First of all, the DIRECTV Mas programming service now offers the Discovery Familia program. This is the US debut of the show that is designed for children and parents and offers family-oriented Spanish programming. There are two variants—a daytime and an evening block—covering learning, preschool activities, nutrition, fashion, health and travel.
DIRECTV has agreed to a new three-year contract to continue the work of Chase Carey, the president and CEO. The new employment agreement is in effect immediately and will run through December 31st, 2010. He joined DIRECTV in December of 2003. Rupert Murdoch, CEO and chairman of News Corp., stated, “I’ve had the pleasure of working with chase for almost 20 years and admire and respect him, both as a business leader and personally.” Chase added, “The past three years have been an amazing time of change and growth for both me and the company. I consider myself fortunate to work with such a strong group of employees, who are among the sharpest and most tenacious in the business, as well as our board of directors, who have provided great support and guidance.”
The company also reported 2Q revenues increased 17 percent to 44.14 billion. Operating profit, before depreciation and amortization, increased to $1.13 billion, a 16 percent increase compared to the second quarter last year. There was a Q2 2007 operating profit of 4740 million and net income of $448 million, both relatively unchanged from last year’s Q2. Per share earnings up one cent to $0.37. The Board of Directors of the company have also authorized up to a $1.0 billion share repurchase program.
