GOES To Lockheed Martin

In December of 2014, the first launch of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-R Series is expected to occur. One of the critical components aboard will be the Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) and Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has been awarded a $178 million contract by NASA to design and build this component.

On September 14th, the U.S. Air Force completed a four-phase transition of the Global Positioning System ground segment to the new Architecture Evolution Plan (AEP), which was delivered by the Space and Missile Systems Center's GPS Wing to the 50th Space Wing to replace the legacy 1970s-era mainframe computer at Schriever AFB, Colo. SMC managed the development, integration and test with the Boeing Company, who led a joint Boeing-Lockheed Martin contractor team, to design and build the new system.

The H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 13 (H-IIA F13) successfully lifted-off from the Tanegashima Space Center at 10:31 a.m. on September 14th (Japan Standard Time, JST) with the Lunar Orbit Explorer KAGUYA (SELENE) aboard. Separation of KAGUYA was confirmed at approximately 45 minutes and 34 seconds after the liftoff.
