Teledyne Advances U.S. National Defense with SDA’s Tranche 3 Tracking Layer Program

February 9, 2026

Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY) announced it has received multiple contract awards to produce advanced infrared Focal Plane Modules (FPMs) for the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) Tranche 3 Tracking Layer program.

These awards solidify Teledyne’s position as a critical hardware provider for the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA), the Department of Defense’s resilient mega-constellation designed to provide global, persistent missile warning and tracking from low-Earth orbit (LEO).

Countering Advanced Hypersonic Threats

The Tranche 3 Tracking Layer is specifically engineered to address the growing danger posed by hypersonic glide vehicles and other advanced missile systems that can maneuver at high speeds. Teledyne’s infrared sensors are designed to detect the unique heat signatures of these threats, providing the high-sensitivity tracking data necessary to close “kill chains” in contested environments. By integrating these sensors into the broader PWSA, the Space Development Agency aims to achieve near-continuous global coverage, ensuring that no launch goes undetected regardless of geographic location.

Next-Generation Radiation-Hardened Sensors

Teledyne has officially commenced production of these state-of-the-art sensors, which feature multi-megapixel, radiation-hardened detectors optimized for the harsh environment of space. These Focal Plane Modules utilize Teledyne’s proprietary GeoSnap and CHROMA digital architectures, which provide best-in-class precision while maintaining the high production rates required for a proliferated architecture. The sensors are designed for a “snapshot” readout mode, allowing for instantaneous data capture without the blurring associated with traditional scanning sensors—a critical requirement for tracking fast-moving hypersonic targets.

Strategic Continuity in the Proliferated Architecture

These awards represent a continuation of Teledyne’s longstanding partnership with the SDA, having previously supplied sensor technology for Tranches 0, 1, and 2. By supporting the Tracking Layer’s next evolution in Tranche 3, Teledyne is helping to realize the SDA’s “spiral development” model, where each successive batch of satellites introduces more advanced capabilities on an aggressive timeline. The company’s ability to rapidly scale manufacturing for complex aerospace components is a key enabler for the Pentagon’s shift away from a few large, vulnerable satellites toward a resilient network of hundreds of smaller, interconnected spacecraft.

Integration with Optical and Data Layers

In the broader PWSA framework, Teledyne’s infrared payloads will work in tandem with optical communication terminals and advanced onboard processing systems. Once a threat is detected by the infrared sensors, the data is instantly routed through the “Transport Layer” via laser links to reach military commanders and interceptor systems on the ground. This seamless integration ensures that the time between initial detection and a defensive response is minimized, providing the U.S. and its allies with a robust “missile shield” in an increasingly complex global security landscape.
