AIA’s 2014 Board Appointments…A Rich History Includes The Wright Brothers + Landing On The Moon

February 3, 2014

[SatNews] The industry consistently “punches above its weight” and fundamentally contributes to the way American’s live, work, travel and communicate.

The Aerospace Industries Association has appointed Michael T. Strianese, Chairman, President and CEO of L-3 Communications as Chairman of AIA's Board of Governors for 2014. David L. Joyce, President and CEO of GE Aviation will serve as Vice Chairman for 2014. Marion C. Blakey has been reappointed as President and CEO and Ginette C. Colot has been reappointed as Secretary-Treasurer.

The aerospace and defense industry in the United States is a leading contributor to the world’s safety and security, global travel, beyond earth exploration and domestic economy. The industry had its formal beginnings in America when Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War, commissioned six naval frigates for the U.S. Navy in 1794. In the following two centuries the Wright Brothers pioneered the first powered flight, U.S. aviators and aviatrixes set records in transcontinental and around the world flights and America broke the sound barrier and landed a man on the Moon.

Today, the aerospace and defense industry in the United States employs more than one million workers across all 50 states. It is also the nation’s largest net exporter and one of the biggest contributors to the annual U.S. GDP. The industry consistently “punches above its weight” and fundamentally contributes to the way American’s live, work, travel and communicate. Technological advancements in the industry have spurred innovations in jet aircraft, communications satellites, the Internet, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and other new technologies that help save and improve the lives of Americans every day.

As one of the United States’ best examples of an effective public-private partnership, the aerospace and defense industry has for decades partnered with the U.S. government to manufacture air traffic control systems, defense platforms, communications equipment and other necessary tools to out pace an ever evolving world.

The strength of the aerospace and defense industry helps keep our men and women in uniform safe and successful on the battlefield, ensures that more than two million airline passengers travel safely and efficiently every day, and enables humankind to explore the frontiers of space and discover new, unimaginable and lifesaving technologies in the process.

The aerospace and defense industry continues to strengthen the successes of today by looking toward the future’s endless possibilities.
