Aruba Networks, Inc. now has a new version of its RFprotect Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS) software that allows users to define their own attack-detection signatures and defend against previously unknown, undisclosed, or unpatched vulnerabilities (zero-day attacks). These user-defined signatures can be implemented almost immediately. Other wireless intrusion prevention systems require the supplying vendor to provide updates, leaving customers vulnerable in the meantime when a new attack is developed. Aruba customers will be able to make their user-defined signatures available to others by contributing them to the Wireless Vulnerabilities and Exploits (WVE) database, a community vulnerabilities database. Aruba has long been an active participant in the WVE Project—Sunnyvale, California

Juniper Networks, Inc. has announced Korea’s Hanaro Telecom has scaled network capacity with Juniper Networks T-series core routers. Juniper Networks T-series offers a unique, non-disruptive upgrade path to multi-terabit capacity. Hanaro selected the T-series for its superior investment protection, low total cost of ownership, and the proven stability and rich feature set of Juniper’s JUNOS software—Sunnyvale, California

Not again, but mebbe so… according to The Los Angeles Times, an online video service is once more being planned by Sony for its PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console. Expected to debut this summer, the first version of the service would enable flicks and TV programs to stream to the PS3 via the Internet for viewing. Let us not forget Sony had a miserable time with two earlier ventures into this arena, those being Movielink and Sony Connect, both shut down due to their inability to compete with Blockbuster and iTunes, respectively. They have quite an uphill climb should this service come to fruition… AppleTV, Vudu and Xbox 360, with the latter claiming some 10 million subscribers already.

But wait, there’s more in the movie download arena… also entering the fray from France is Carrefour. This is a huge supermarket chain and follows Wal-Mart as the second largest retail group in the world. They want to offer DTR /DTO (download-to-rent / download-to-own) services to capture their share of the VOD market. Carrefour beat the United Kingdom’s Tesco to the punch in this regard, who is also planning to offer flick downloads. If Wal-Mart is an example for how successful such might be, they killed their VOD service last December.

A conservative commentator has been hired by CNN—this is none other than former White House press secretary, the dynamic Tony Snow. Snow was with the Fox News Channel for 10 years and he also co-hosted CNN’s Crossfire prior to joining the Fox network.

  • Linux, which has been much maligned by Symbian and Microsoft as a non-starter in the handset operating system market, is set to see strong growth as issues with framework fragmentation and silicon requirements are alleviated. The growing momentum behind the LiMo Foundation initiative, as well as the marketing boost that has been realized from the entry of Google’s Android solution, has been further enhanced by Nokia’s support of the Maemo solution and its purchase of Trolltech. ABI Research believes that by 2013, nearly one out of every five mid- or high-end mobile devices will use a Linux operating system. This new ABI Research study has found that Linux solutions will be at the center of the drive to bring more content-rich environments to users who currently use mid-tier devices. More importantly, it appears likely mobile Linux solutions will be an important building block in enabling an application domain that embraces web-based applications and blended web/native applications. The new report, “Mobile Linux: Bringing License-Free Operating Systems to Smartphones and Middle-Tier Devices” provides a picture of the projected uptake of Linux in two major applications, as a commercial OS and as an RTOS replacement—London, United Kingdom
