The U.S. Navy has shot down the wayward U.S. spysat over the Pacific… the missile struck the satellite 130 miles in the atmosphere and destroyed the satellite at 10:30 EST. Two officials said the missile launched successfully, but details of the launch are not immediately known. The goal of this first of the kind mission was not just to hit the satellite but to hit the fuel tank with the 1,000 pounds of hydrazine. US officials had stated the fuel could pose a health hazard if it landed in a populated area. Although the odds were small that such would occur, even if the Pentagon had selected NOT to shoot down the spysat, it was determined it was worth trying to eliminate that small chance. Officials said it would take a day or more to determine if all of the fuel has been destroyed.
