From Vandenburg Air Force Base, the Cosmo/SkyMed II satellite has been launched successfully, the second of the evenutal six in orbit satellite of the constellation packed with newgen radar gear. Italy and Argentina worked together on this System for Emergency Management (Siasge) project through the Argentinian National Commission on Space Activities and Italy’s ASI. The launch of the satellite was viewed live by teachers and students in Argentina. Thales Alenia Space-Italia developed the Cosmo/SkyMed program. The system will capture Earth imagery through the use of an X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar instrument.
