An example as to how the digital divide may be bridged: On Saturday June 8th, President Ollanta Humala of Peru launched the “PIASS” program, whereby a ship will travel from village to village to cater for the basic needs of more than 7,000 people in 30 communities on the Napo River. The ship’s mission is to travel along the rivers of the Amazon to deliver government-provided medical, educational and banking services to isolated populations. The ship provides services including banking and ATM, medical and dental treatments, and government services including Ministry of the Interior facilities.
Gilat is proud to have participated in the launch of the platform, providing the satellite communication infrastructure to enable these services. In fact, the launch included a “telemedicine” demonstration using the satellite network that enables the ship to consult with other countries and other areas in Peru.
