Iceland’s Post and Telecommunications Administration (PTA) has announced that it is to facilitate the submission of satellite filings to the ITU.
The Icelandic government has published the regulations that set the framework for the PTA to undertake satellite filing work.
The PTA is currently in advanced discussions with ManSat to set up the processors for satellite filing work to be undertaken. ManSat, an Isle of Man based company, is the commercial market leader in provision of spectrum to the satellite industry. Detailed work will be undertaken by ManSat’s Icelandic subsidiary, IceSat, facilitating the new satellite filing process on the PTA’s behalf.
Over the last 24 months, the PTA has undertaken an extensive knowledge build up by examining the satellite filing procedures and regulations of the world’s leading nations in satellite filing with a view to creating a best practice process for Iceland in this arena.
Hrafnkell V. Gíslason, Managing Director of the PTA, said that as a nation known for experience in communications regulation and the position taken in international affairs, this opportunity to assist the global satellite industry with access to satellite spectrum is welcomed. The PTA sees this as a part of the organization's initiative to be an active player in the space sector and forward to welcoming the satellite industry to Iceland.”

The Post and Telecom Administration (PTA) is responsible for the administration of electronic communications and postal affairs in Iceland and is the officially designated member of ITU on behalf of the Icelandic government. The Administration is an independent body under the ultimate administration of the Ministry of Transport and Local Government. Responsibility for the daily activities of the Administration lies with the Director who is appointed by the Minister. The Administration advises the Minister on matters relating to electronic communications and postal matters. The PTA operates according to the Electronic Communications passed by the Icelandic Parliament in 2003 and the Act of the Post and Telecom Administration No. 69/2003.
ManSat and IceSat ManSat carries out satellite filings for the Isle of Man under a contract with the Isle of Man Government's Communications Commission. Isle of Man's satellite filings are made to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in Geneva via the administration of the United Kingdom (Ofcom). IceSat is a subsidiary company of the ManSat Group specifically formed to work with the Post & Telecommunications Commission (PTA) to carry out satellite filings for Iceland under a contract with the Icelandic Government’s PTA.
