Rail users across Britain can now plan their journey while on the move using Train Search, a new iPhone application that, unlike other national rail travel information apps, is available for download at no charge. Launched this week by CrossCountry, Britain’s largest rail franchise, this real time train information app is designed to help customers search for train times for any U.K. rail journey, and has already become the 4th most downloaded free travel app in the U.K. in less than one week. The app allows users instant access to live train times, so they can determine the time their train will arrive and plan connections. Timetables will show calling points, changes, and platform numbers, and users can also use the ‘current position’ feature to identify their nearest station, view a map to get directions to that station and even store and save favourite routes. iPhone users can now download Train Search absolutely free from the iPhone Apps Store. A version of the application is available for other mobile phones, PDAs, and Blackberry®, all of which can be downloaded free from www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk.

FLO TV Incorporated, provider of FLO TV™ live mobile TV service and a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), has unveiled the FLO TV Personal Television. This is an entirely new, dedicated device that will allow TV lovers to watch their favorite news, live sports, children’s programming and entertainment on a dedicated device for mobile TV viewing. The FLO TV Personal Television will be available for purchase this holiday season at leading retailers across the country. The FLO TV Personal Television is created with the single focus of delivering high-quality TV for a convenient, easy and fun television experience while on-the-go. The device receives live and time-shifted content over the FLO TV dedicated multicast network with no buffering, downloading or waiting to view content. With the swipe of a finger, consumers can channel surf through the FLO TV service’s extensive programming lineup.

Monsoon Multimedia has rolled out their HAVA Mobile Player application for iPhone and iPod Touch users. The HAVA Mobile Player app allows HAVA customers to view and control their home television service, including cable, satellite and TiVo, from anywhere in the world via their iPhone. The HAVA Mobile Player for iPhone was designed for seamless integration with Apple’s unique smartphone allowing viewers to control their home television service (whether it’s cable or satellite, receiver or DVR, standard or high definition) via the touch screen interface. The iPhone version of the HAVA Mobile Player is optimized software for the video-streaming application that Monsoon also provides for PCs, Netbooks, and other mobile devices. HAVA is a standalone device that does not require a dedicated or connected PC/Mac in the home to enable the iPhone or other portable devices when watching your TV over the Internet. In addition to place shifting video to PC or smartphones, Monsoon’s HAVA features unique DVR capability that allow users to initiate a recording to their PC or attached storage, or pause, rewind or fast forward their live TV.

Ideaworks Labs, creator of the cross-platform Airplay SDK for native mobile application development, has announced their Airplay SDK now supports natively-compiled Android applications for all Android devices currently in the market. Airplay SDK allows developers to deploy rich connected apps across hundreds of devices by compiling their application once to native CPU instructions, then deploying with a single click to iPhone, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile, BREW and other platforms. Developers write a single codebase using standard C++, POSIX and OpenGL ES APIs, irrespective of the underlying operating system or hardware. The Airplay APIs and resource framework make it simple to accommodate varying device form factors such as screen size, touchscreen, keypad and accelerometer. Furthermore, all device-specific firmware issues and idiosyncrasies are handled within the Airplay runtime. Developers can save as much as 40 percent of their initial development cost, and up to 90 percent of their device porting and testing costs, as well as opening up target devices that were previously considered too cumbersome or expensive to target.
