FRANCE: August 18, 2007—Satnews Daily—Telecomms Sans Frontieres (TSF) has rushed a team from their base at Managua directly into Lima to assist with the telecommunications emergency that will result from yesterday’s massive earthquake of 8.0 on the Richter scale. The National Institute of Civil Defense stated the quake has already killed more than 400 people and the death toll is expected to climb even higher.
TSF’s Emergency relief team will transport satellite communication equipment consisting of Terminal Inmarsat BGAN, RBGAN, GAN M4 and Mini M to the region to set up one or several communications centers to provide Internet connectivity, telephone lines and fax capabilities. TSF is expected to send reinforcements from both their American and European bases. TSF also runs humanitarian calling operations to offer support and assistance to affected civilians, affording them a link with the outside world.
