MEASAT-3a Moving Back To The U.S. For Repairs

MEASAT-3a satellite The schedule was set — MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd's MEASAT-3a was moving toward its launch date of August 21st from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Now, instead of blasting into orbit, MEASAT-3a must be returned to Orbital Sciences in the U.S. for repairs, only described as of this writing as "technical issues". The company is working with both the launch services provider, Intelsat, and that firm's subcontractor, SeaLaunch, to determine the best method to handle the repairs and to then establish a new launch date for the satellite. The payload is comprised of 12 Ku- and 12 high power C-band transponders. The satellite operator will be Astro All-Asia, who also happens to be a MEASAT sister company. The satellite is planned to expand that firm's telecoms and DTH services to a broad Malaysian customer base.

Additionally, MEASAT will now have to reschedule the student event planned to commemorate the launch of the MEASAT-3a spacecraft. The Company had awarded 25 top students from around the world, including 5 students from Malaysia, with a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore the Russian space industry in Moscow and Baikonur. The highlight of the trip, which was scheduled to take place between 16th and 22nd of August, was the chance to see the launch of the MEASAT-3a spacecraft. MEASAT’s Corporate Social Responsibility program is focused on developing the next generation of Malaysia’s technology leaders. With this focus in mind, the company has been undertaking a number of activities including engaging with local schools and universities to raise the awareness of their students of the local space industry; supporting Malaysian postgraduate students at European universities to develop knowledge in the space industry; and focus on the personal and professional development of staff.
