Satellite Internet, one of Britain’s leading Internet Service Providers (ISP), has put forward its solution for homes and businesses which cannot benefit from a Fiber-to-the-Cabinet deployment due to their remote locations.
Speaking at the Independent Networks Cooperative Association (INCA) Seminar, titled ‘Delivering Superfast Wireless Broadband Services’, Satellite Internet’s Managing Director Mike Locke revealed details of Satellite Internet’s latest project, which has just been awarded funding from the Department for Culture, Media & Sport’s Innovation Fund, to be carried out in partnership with Connecting Devon and Somerset.
In his presentation, ‘Satellite Broadband Reaching the Most Challenging Areas’, Locke outlined how the scheme will begin with a Feasibility Study and compare the merits of both an individual connection, where a satellite dish is installed directly on the property, and a connection to a single point which is then shared through a local network infrastructure such as WiFi. At the end of the project, several new satellite networks will have been installed, providing superfast connections with tried and tested technology powered by Satellite Internet’s existing partner SES Broadband Services (SBBS).
“While there is debate about whether it is five percent of the country, or one, or two percent, there will always be some houses and businesses too far from the cabinet to benefit from fiber, meaning another technology not constrained by line length is needed—this is where satellite comes in,” said Locke. “Satellite broadband can be deployed right now, is cost effective and provides consistent, reliable and fast download speeds. It is already working for individuals and businesses across the country and is a known and realistic solution that can be installed anywhere.”
As well as discussing the role of satellite broadband, the INCA seminar, held yesterday at the People’s History Museum, also looked at superfast-capable wireless technology and how to approach securing state aid funding, with projects that are live or under development also showcased. Attendants included local authority representatives aiming to deliver 100 percent superfast coverage, industry and project representatives.
