A remote sensing satellite is in the works for the United Arab Emirates and other member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). In an article published by Gulf News, Brigadier Khalifa Mohammad Al Rumaithi, the Chief of Military Works for the UAE Armed Forces, stated as much during a conference being held in Dubai. There was no actual elaboration of the plans for such a satellite, although he did state DubaiSat-1 should see launch by the close of 2008, the UAE’s first satellite. This satellite is purportedly for peaceful purposes, such as natural disaster management, mapping, and planning. The GCC is comprised of the countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
