BEIJING, CHINA: August 14, 2007—Satnews Daily—According to a report in the Beijing Times and the China View website, the Beidou (Big Dipper) satellite monitoring system has been developed by China. This system is designed to monitor the transportation of dangerous chemicals. The information is stored by the satellite and then transmitted to the land control center. In case of an emergency, the center notifies police for a rescue operation, as might be the case in a traffic accident.
The Chinese launched their fourth Beidou navigation satellite on February 3rd of this year. The craft provides all-weather and all-day navigation and positioning information to ground stations. The previous three such satellites were launched in 2000 and 2003.
