Gotta keep an eye on this alleged “leader” of Iran… the country has tested a missile that can lift a satellite into space, this according to the country’s state television service. Ahmadinejad gave the order for the actual rocket launch from the Iranian Space Center last month and is quoted as saying, “Our presence in space is a necessity. Any country that respects itself should control the most advanced technology…we are grateful to God for witnessing the first and determined step toward an Iranian satellite.” And the surrounding nations must be just as thrilled with this success as is Mahmoud himself. The rocket should be able to lift a “research” satellite into space by next year, and there is already a name for the space vehicle—Omnid, translation=”hope”. This is believed to be a low altitude satellite project with reasonably intelligent folk also understanding the satellite COULD also be used for other than research purposes… say, intelligence gathering or other strategic studies. No doubt the Israeli TECSAR and other nations’ surveillance sats will be keeping tabs on this “research” endeavor. Previous launches by Iran have been rather overstated, and some even doubt whether or not the rocket even reached space… other attempts using the same rocket found the vehicles never attaining orbital altitude.
