Boeing is currently building a communications satellite network for the military and there’s a great deal of interest in this work by… Australia. The country may well join in with this effort and help with some of the monies necessary to fund the project. Partnership negotiations are currently underway for Australia’s participation in the U.S. Wideband Global Satellite Communications Network (WGS), according to Mr. Roger Krone of the company’s Network and Space Systems division.
Such involvement by Australia would increase the coverage and worldwide capacity for the system. Plus, two-way communication during wartime would definitely be enhanced. Australia is, currently, the only other possible partner for this network, a sign of strengthening ties between the U.S., Australia and Japan for ballistic missile defense. Satellite acquisition is being managed by the U.S.A.F.’s Space and Missile Systems Center in Los Angeles. October 9th is the expected date of the first satellite launch.
