Blue Coat Systems, Inc. [NASDAQ: BCSI] has been selected by SeaMobile (global provider of at-sea communications, connectivity and content services) to implement the Blue Coat ProxySG appliances to accelerate email traffic and Web access for passengers using Internet cafés on cruise ships. Blue Coat’s ProxySG appliances accelerate applications, email and Web content and optimize bandwidth usage over satellite links. Livio Arleo, director Internet Development and Deployment, SeaMobile, said, “Our initial deployment shows that Blue Coat ProxySG appliances provide a dramatic increase in speed in the delivery of email and Web content while improving bandwidth usage. Acceleration, combined with optimized bandwidth, results in our ability to support more users and a significant improvement in the Internet café experience for passengers.”
Satellite Internet access often involves high latency because the signals must travel great distances between a ground station, an orbiting satellite and a ship. High latency introduces lengthy response times for email, Web surfing and other applications compared to a land-based experience. Blue Coat ProxySG appliances use the company’s MACH5 patent-pending framework of acceleration technologies designed to accelerate all key enterprise applications, including Web and secure Web applications (SSL), file services, email/Microsoft Exchange and video. As the MACH5 technology is integrated in Blue Coat ProxySG appliances, it enables organizations to manage all user/application interactions as well as to stop undesirable applications, regulate less important applications, and accelerate critical applications—Sunnyvale, California
