Newtec + Thaicom—Technology Showcase + Business Agreement (Event—SatBroadcasting™)

June 19, 2014

[SatNews] Newtec has announced during CommunicAsia2014 that Thaicom PLC, a leading Asian satellite operator, has selected Newtec technology (M6100 Broadcast Satellite Modulators) to install on the platform of Thaicom-6, enabling its satellite to provide TV Broadcasting services in C-band and Ku-band to serve customers with the best value and viewing experience.

The Newtec M6100 Broadcast Satellite Modulator.

More than 30 Newtec M6100 Broadcast Satellite Modulators are installed on Thaicom-6 with the Newtec’s Automated Equalink® technology, which allows Thaicom to either save money on space capacity, lower programming cost or to increase service availability. Broadcasters can gain an increase of up to 10 percent in throughput without changing any system parameters or set-top boxes, making it possible to upgrade some SD programs to HD or add content. Newtec’s equipment also includes Clean Channel Technology®. This combination of improved roll-offs for DVB-S2 and advanced filtering technologies allows optimal bandwidth utilization, resulting in even higher efficiency and a significant improvement in performance by 1.2dB.

The extension to the DVB-S2 standard, a new specification developed by DVB members that include Newtec, called DVB-S2X, is also implemented on Newtec products, or is available as a software upgrade. This new standard brings further capabilities on top of DVB-S2, including lower Roll-Offs (RO) and increased granularity in MODCOD choice.

“We are continually advancing our solutions for broadcasters and operators and have implemented our latest technologies to ensure Thaicom can offer its customers the best possible service and viewing experience,” added Mario Querner, VP Asia of Newtec.

Dr. Sakon Kittivatcharapong, Senior Vice President Ground System Operations at Thaicom PLC, said, "Newtec is our reliable supplier for THAICOM's broadcasting platform. We are delighted on the technology advancement of Newtec, which will bring quality services to THAICOM's customers and viewers throughout our service footprints in Asia and Africa."

Thaicom is a leading Asian satellite operator in providing innovative solutions on telecommunication and satellite that answer every need with a full spectrum of services, including integrated solutions for satellite broadcast and broadband. Thaicom has delivered more than 600 television channels, including 70 in HD. Thaicom has launched six satellites into orbit; three satellites are in operation. Thaicom 5 and Thaicom 6 are broadcasting satellites at 78.5 degrees East, broadcasting for Thailand and SE Asia, and are boarding more than 600 TV channels (coverage over Thailand, SE Asia and Africa; by the name “Africom-1”).

For more information about Newtec’s DTH satellite technologies, visit Newtec at its CommunicAsia booth in Singapore (level 1, stand P2-01) from the 17th until the 20th of June 2014.
