BUENOS AIRES / ROME, April 8, 2026 – e-GEOS, a joint venture between the Italian Space Agency (20%) and Telespazio (80%), and VENG, an Argentine technology firm primarily owned by the Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE), have officially signed a multi-year agreement to expand the global marketing and distribution of data from the SAOCOM (Satélite Argentino de Observación Con Microondas) constellation.

This new agreement cements a relationship that began in 2021, positioning e-GEOS as a primary global distributor for SAOCOM’s L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. Under the framework of the Italian-Argentine Satellite System for Emergency Management (SIASGE), the SAOCOM 1A and 1B satellites work in tandem with Italy’s COSMO-SkyMed constellation. This partnership creates the world’s first integrated European-American radar system specifically designed for emergency management and environmental monitoring.
Strategic Leadership and Innovation
The collaboration reflects a deepening industrial and institutional tie between Italy and Argentina. By combining L-band and X-band radar capabilities, the two nations provide a comprehensive view of the Earth’s surface that is unmatched in the commercial market.
C. Milena A. Lerario, CEO of e-GEOS, noted that the new agreement consolidates the e-GEOS satellite data portfolio, increasingly enabling advanced solutions to support global strategic priorities ranging from emergency management to sustainable development. This path promotes long-term international partnerships focused on innovation as part of Leonardo’s thirty-year commitment to the Argentine space sector.
Laureano Quiroga, General Manager of VENG, highlighted the technical advantages of the partnership, noting that L-band wavelengths penetrate vegetation and soil to provide critical data for global agriculture. He also emphasized that interferometric (InSAR) solutions offer sub-centimetric precision for tracking ground deformation, while the technology remains highly effective for oil spill detection and maritime surveillance.
Expanding Market Demand
During the previous phase of collaboration, e-GEOS identified a surging demand for SAOCOM data across several key sectors. Infrastructure monitoring for stability and ground movement has seen significant growth, as has natural resource management in mining and energy operations. Water resource management, particularly the detection of network leaks and moisture tracking, remains a high priority. Furthermore, the agreement helps VENG consolidate its presence in international markets by leveraging Argentina’s technological excellence and the commercial reach of e-GEOS.
Technical Capabilities
The SAOCOM 1A and 1B satellites provide high-resolution, quadripolar L-band imagery. Unlike optical satellites, these radar sensors can see through clouds and operate in total darkness. The unique ability of the L-band to penetrate the ground and canopy makes it indispensable for hydrological modeling and detecting underground features.
