FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – MTN Satellite Communications (MTN) has secured a landmark agreement to become one of the first authorized maritime resellers for Amazon Leo, the low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband network formerly known as Project Kuiper.
Announced on Feb. 10, the partnership integrates Amazon’s high-capacity constellation into MTN’s multi-orbit network, targeting commercial shipping, yachting, offshore energy, and cruise sectors.
The deal positions MTN to provide near-global coverage, from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific, leveraging Amazon’s growing fleet of more than 150 production satellites currently in orbit.
Shifting the Maritime LEO Landscape
The entry of Amazon Leo into the maritime sector follows a period of rapid market disruption led by SpaceX’s Starlink. However, MTN’s strategy emphasizes a hybrid, “multi-network” architecture. By adding Amazon Leo to a portfolio that already includes Starlink and Eutelsat OneWeb, MTN aims to offer unparalleled redundancy for mission-critical vessel operations and crew welfare.
Amazon Leo is specifically designed to integrate with Amazon Web Services (AWS), allowing maritime operators to move data from ship to cloud over a private, secure backbone—a key differentiator for enterprise fleets requiring high-level cybersecurity and telemetry integration.
Hardware Specifications: The Ultra and Pro Tiers
MTN will deploy Amazon’s newly unveiled maritime-grade hardware, which utilizes electronically steered phased-array antennas to maintain connectivity in high sea states without moving parts.
- Leo Ultra Terminal: An enterprise-grade 19×30-inch array capable of gigabit-class performance (up to 1 Gbps download).
- Leo Pro Terminal: A standard 11-inch unit delivering speeds up to 400 Mbps.
- Network Performance: The system is engineered to provide lower latency than traditional Geostationary (GEO) solutions, supporting real-time remote diagnostics and high-definition video conferencing.

“Integrating this new constellation will give us unparalleled flexibility to custom-design network solutions that offer continuous, high-performance service, including in the most challenging environments for maritime customers,” stated Steve Ritacco, MTN Senior Vice President of Technology and Product Development.
Trevor Vieweg, Head of Global Business for Amazon Leo, noted that the agreement will enable “everything from enhanced crew welfare to advanced vessel tracking and seamless integration with shore-based operations.”
Future Outlook and Constellation Milestones
While the reseller network is expanding, Amazon is currently in a high-tempo launch phase to meet regulatory requirements. The company requested a 24-month extension from the FCC in late January to fulfill its license mandate of 3,236 satellites. Despite these logistical hurdles, the commercial rollout remains on track for Q1 2026, with MTN set to initiate pilot deployments for its key cruise and offshore customers immediately.
