ELCHE, Spain – On Wednesday, March 4, PLD Space announced the closing of a €180 million ($195 million) Series C equity funding round. The investment was led by Japanese industrial giant Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, which contributed €50 million as a strategic launch customer. The round also saw significant participation from the Spanish government through the CDTI (INNVIERTE fund) and COFIDES, alongside private equity firm Nazca Capital.

With more than €350 million raised to date, this capital injection solidifies PLD Space’s position as Europe’s leading private orbital launch provider.
Industrial Scale-Up and Global Infrastructure
The new capital is earmarked for the industrialization of the MIURA 5 orbital launcher. Following the successful flight of the MIURA 1 technology demonstrator on October 7, 2023, the company has transitioned to full-scale production of its orbital vehicle.
Key milestones currently in progress include:
- Kourou Launch Complex: Substantial progress on civil engineering works at the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) in French Guiana, where PLD Space is the first private company to secure a dedicated launch site at the ELM-Diamant area.
- Asian Market Expansion: The partnership with Mitsubishi Electric includes multi-launch contracts intended to deploy satellite constellations for Japan and the broader Asian region.
- Institutional Support: The company was recently selected for the European Space Agency’s (ESA) European Launcher Challenge (ELC), a program valued at €169 million.
Strategic Autonomy and Market Rationale
The investment arrives as Europe faces a critical “launch gap.” The partnership with Mitsubishi Electric signals a shift toward a global commercial model, leveraging Mitsubishi’s industrial expertise and satellite business to provide reliable access to orbit for small satellite operators.
“This financing reinforces our technological and industrial leadership in the launcher market, enabling us to execute the next phase of our strategic roadmap with the speed and scale required to compete globally,” said Ezequiel Sánchez, Executive President of PLD Space. “MIURA 5 was designed to address a clear and growing capacity gap in the market.”
Timeline for Orbital Flight
PLD Space is currently finalizing the testing of its Qualification Model 1 (QM1) in Teruel, Spain. The inaugural test flight of MIURA 5 remains on track for late 2026 from Kourou. The company’s long-term roadmap aims for a flight cadence exceeding 30 launches per year by 2030, supported by its reusable first-stage technology.
In addition to the MIURA 5 program, PLD Space continues to advance its LINCE crewed capsule project, with initial unmanned tests planned for 2028 to establish a sovereign European human spaceflight capability.
