EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Space Systems Command (SSC) formally established System Delta 80 (SYD 80) during a Dec. 12 ceremony at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. The new unit consolidates the acquisition and integration of launch solutions, on-orbit servicing, and range systems under the Assured Access to Space (AATS) portfolio.
Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant, commander of SSC, presided over the ceremony, where Col. Ryan Hiserote assumed command of the delta. While SYD 80 officially activated on Oct. 7—during the government shutdown—the December event marked its public stand-up.
“Today’s ceremony formally recognizes the Delta’s important space work already underway,” Garrant said. “Under Col. Hiserote’s leadership, I am confident System Delta 80 will accelerate the fielding of capabilities that support responsive and reliable launch, ready and resilient spaceports, and servicing, mobility, and logistics.”
SYD 80 unifies the design, development, and delivery of systems under a mission-focused command structure. It comprises six System Program Directors overseeing National Security Space Launch, the Rocket Systems Launch Program, Launch and Test Range Systems, and Servicing, Mobility, & Logistics programs.
“System Delta 80 drives the rapid fielding of critical capabilities to ensure launch solutions and range systems, while also pursuing emerging servicing, mobility, and logistics capabilities,” Hiserote said. “Together, we will ensure our Nation maintains its strategic advantage in space.”
The activation is part of SSC’s broader shift to “System Deltas,” designed to synchronize acquisition efforts with the Space Force’s operational needs.
Crucial to the delta’s success is its integration with operational units. Col. Hiserote emphasized the importance of forging strong ties with Space Launch Delta 30 at Vandenberg Space Force Base and Space Launch Delta 45 at Patrick Space Force Base. By synchronizing acquisition strategies with these operational ranges, SYD 80 aims to streamline the process of moving assets from the procurement phase to orbit, ensuring seamless support for customers across the Department of Defense, intelligence community, and commercial sector.
As the field command responsible for developing resilient space capabilities, SSC oversees a $15.6 billion annual acquisition budget. The activation of System Delta 80 represents a strategic realignment to better address Great Power Competition, ensuring the U.S. can outpace emerging threats. By consolidating launch, logistics, and range systems under one roof, the command intends to deliver faster, more adaptable solutions to the joint force and allied partners.
