Operators Pivot to Managed Solutions as Ground Segment Complexity Grows per Novaspace Report

December 12, 2025

PARIS — As the satellite ground segment becomes increasingly complex, operators are aggressively shifting strategies to integrate managed solutions and advanced network management. According to the Novaspace’s 6th Ground Segment Market Prospects report this projects a $106 billion market and a fundamental shift in satellite infrastructure economics.

The study forecasts a surge in demand for user terminals (UT) and gateways, projecting commercial UT shipments to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.6%. Meanwhile, the military satellite communications (milsatcom) sector is expected to generate $26.5 billion in terminal value through 2034, driven by renewed focus on sovereignty and defense considerations.

NGSO constellations are reshaping Satcom, Earth Observation (EO), and Ground Segment as a Service (GSaaS) into a flexible, software‑driven ecosystem. With digital infrastructure advancing and satellite proliferation accelerating, the ground segment is entering a new era defined by service flexibility, network integration, and strategic partnerships across satcom and EO ecosystems.

A Shift to Managed Services

Supply‑side growth is fueling demand for ground stations, user terminals, and GSaaS offerings. The rise of NGSO is accelerating GSaaS adoption, pushing providers from CAPEX‑heavy models to OPEX‑driven, on‑demand services.

Consolidation across the value chain is intensifying, with legacy operators pooling infrastructure and adopting multi‑orbit strategies that combine GEO’s high‑capacity backhaul with NGSO’s low‑latency coverage.

“As ground infrastructure grows more complex, operators are integrating managed services and advanced network strategies to optimize bandwidth and meet diverse customer needs,” said Alix Rousselière, Novaspace Senior Consultant. “These shifts are essential to expand service portfolios and capture new revenue.”

Key Market Forecasts & Technology Trends

The report highlights several critical growth areas and technological evolutions:

  • Commercial User Terminals: Shipments are forecast to grow at a 7.6% CAGR.
  • Defense & Sovereignty: Milsatcom terminals are projected to generate $26.25 billion in cumulative value through 2034.
  • Next-Gen Hardware: Growing demand for data is driving smaller, higher‑frequency gateways and advanced antennas, including flat‑panel and electronically steered arrays.
  • Frequency Migration: Operators are moving toward Ka‑, Q/V‑, and E‑band frequencies, with large‑scale Q/V‑band deployments expected by 2026.

Novaspace’s Ground Segment Market Prospects report delivers a complete view of commercial and government ground segment applications, including Satcom, Earth Observation, and user terminals. It provides technology roadmaps, external market drivers, and profiles of key stakeholders from established players to emerging start-ups. Readers will find detailed market quantification with historical data, current trends, and 10-year forecasts for antennas, RF equipment, baseband systems, and user terminals.
