VIENNA, Va — Specialty Systems, Inc. (SSI), a subsidiary of Castellum, Inc., has received a contract valued at $66.2 million from the U.S. Navy to support the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD).
Supporting the SHIELD Portfolio
Under this five-year agreement, SSI will provide specialized engineering and logistics support for the Webster Outlying Field (WOLF) division. The work supports the “SHIELD” portfolio, a program focused on the integration of cybersecurity, software engineering, and logistics data for naval aviation and defense platforms. This award serves as a recompete and expansion of previous work, consolidating multiple efforts into a single vehicle intended to streamline operational delivery for the Navy.
Significance
This was a “Full and Open” competition, meaning SSI beat out larger Tier 1/Tier 2 primes without relying on small-business protections. It cements their lock on the “Lakehurst” market—specifically the support equipment for aircraft carriers (catapults/arresting gear).
Corporate Impact and Strategy
“This $66 million win is the largest single contract award in Castellum’s history,” said Mark Fuller, the chief executive officer of Castellum. “It provides a long-term foundation of recurring revenue and validates our strategy of acquiring high-performing government contractors like SSI.”
Operational Deliverables
The contract scope requires SSI to execute services across several technical domains:
- Cyber Operations: Integrating defensive cyber capabilities into aviation logistics infrastructure.
- Systems Engineering: Developing and sustaining data systems critical to naval readiness.
- Program Management: Providing modeling and supply chain oversight for deployed assets.
Performance Timeline
Work will be performed primarily at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland. The contract performance period extends through late 2029.
Specialty Systems, Inc. (SSI) is the operational “crown jewel” of Castellum, Inc., acquired in 2021 to anchor the firm’s defense engineering capabilities. Historically a Navy-focused shop specializing in aircraft launch and recovery equipment (ALRE), SSI has recently pivoted to broader strategic deterrence work. This $66.2M NAVAIR prime contract and inclusion on the $151B MDA SHIELD IDIQ signal a graduation from small-business set-asides to unrestricted “Full and Open” prime competition, validating Castellum’s M&A growth strategy.
