NSSL Assists With Eco-Boat Speed Record
NSSL supported the world’s fastest eco-boat in its successful attempt to smash the round the world speed record. The boat beat the previous record holder by almost 14 days, crossing the finish line in Sagunto, Spain, at 13:42 GMT on Friday, June 27th, having taken 60 days 23 hours and 49 minutes to travel 24,000 nautical miles. Reliable communications were absolutely critical to enable the crew to remain in contact with supporters, sponsors and family members, but more importantly, stay in contact with HQ and other port authorities in case they needed emergency help. NSSL provided the equipment which included a Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) unit and Iridium handheld phone. The BGAN was used by the support team which travelled in advance of Earthrace to the various ports it docked at. The Iridium handheld phone was kept on board at all times and enabled the crew to be kept up to date with the support teams. According to Danielle Edwards, Product Marketing Manager at NSSL, “This is a superb way to showcase how flexible and effective satellite communications can now be. The combined communications solutions we provided allowed the Earthrace crew to remain reliably in touch wherever they were in the world, regardless of location or conditions. Additionally, we at NSSL feel that it has never been more important to promote the benefits of alternative fuels. Ultimately, we are delighted to have helped set a British world record!” Select the Earthrace graphic below for more information…—London, United Kingdom
