Although registered by Vietnam with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for release in 1999, the Vinasat-1 satellite has now experienced three delays for its launch date. The first launch was supposed to occur on March 29th, but that was then moved to the second launch date of April 2nd. Now the third date has been forwarded, this being April 10th. A positive face has been placed on the delay, with the deputy director of the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) stating all business plans for the satellite have now been completed and usage capitalization is being studied. Costing $180M/USD, VNPT believes Vinasat-1 will save approximately $15M per year as reliance upon satellites is moved from foreign craft to the Vietnamese bird.
