KT, formerly known as Korea Telecom, plans to launch their 5th comsat in June of 2010. Named Mugunghwa 6, this satellite is to replace the aging Mugunghwa 3, which will be decommissioned in 2011. This satellite will pack 30 transmitters. The primary purpose for the new satellite will be for the SkyLife satTV service and for other DTV transmissions. KT currently has two comsats in service, those being the aforementioned Mugunghwa 3 and Mugunghwa 5, with both the #1 and #2 satellites within that family no longer in operation. Mugunghwa 2 remains available as an emergency backup satellite. Mugunghwa 5 was launched in 2006.
