Scotland’s Comprehensive Space Sector Sustainability Assessment

February 5, 2026

On February 5, 2026, Callala Ltd, trading as SustainabilityOf.Space, announced the launch of the Scottish Space Sector Sustainability, Safety, and Security Maturity Assessment.

This pioneering project, funded by Space Scotland and the UK Space Agency, represents the first comprehensive, evidence-based evaluation of the Scottish space industry’s readiness across these three critical operational pillars.

Establishing a Sovereign Evidence Base

The assessment aims to map the capabilities of over 50 organizations across Scotland to establish a baseline for the sector. Unlike public benchmarking tools, this project utilizes confidential engagement to capture a “real-world” view of what companies are doing—regardless of whether they are ready to report it publicly.

  • Space Sustainability: Focuses on environmental impact, decarbonization readiness, and long-term responsible business practices.
  • Space Safety: Addresses debris mitigation, collision avoidance, and end-of-life planning.
  • Space Security: Evaluates operational resilience and the robustness of the space supply chain.

The Economics of Responsible Growth

A key innovation of the study is its focus on the economics of action. The project distinguishes between sustainability measures that companies can integrate into their current business models and those that are internationally important but require external policy or economic interventions to become viable. This “nuanced understanding” is designed to help the Space Scotland Environmental Task Force focus resources on targeted interventions rather than generic standards.

Strategic Alignment and Global Leadership

The initiative directly supports Scotland’s Space Sustainability Roadmap—the first of its kind globally—and informs the development of UK space standards through the Earth∞Space Sustainability Initiative (ESSI) and the British Standards Institution (BSI).

“Establishing where Scottish companies are today, we can design targeted interventions that enable responsible growth without sacrificing competitiveness,” said Andrew Iwanoczko, Director of SustainabilityOf.Space.

Project Deliverables

The assessment will culminate in two major outputs:

  1. Scottish Space Activity Taxonomy: A map of the sector categorized by specific operational activities.
  2. Maturity Report: An anonymized, aggregated report identifying capability ranges, common challenges, and priority areas for intervention to guide future investment and regulation.
