CHIBA, Japan — In a significant move to advance propulsion capabilities for the rapidly growing small satellite market, Pale Blue has officially entered into a demonstration contract with Axelspace Corporation. Under the agreement, effective December 16, 2025, Pale Blue will conduct an in-orbit demonstration (IOD) of its advanced “PBH-100” Hall thruster in 2027 using Axelspace’s microsatellite bus technology.
Validating Next-Generation Propulsion
The core of this mission is the flight heritage validation of the PBH-100, an instantly ignitable compact Hall thruster designed specifically for satellites in the 50 to 200 kg class. As satellite constellations grow more complex and low Earth orbit becomes more congested, the demand for reliable, high-performance propulsion has surged.
The PBH-100 aims to meet this demand by achieving an optimal balance between high thrust and high specific impulse. However, its standout feature is its rapid startup capability. Unlike conventional Hall thrusters, which often require significant warm-up times, the PBH-100 is designed to ignite instantly. This reduction in startup latency is a critical operational advantage, allowing satellite operators to maximize uptime for mission equipment and execute urgent orbital maneuvers—such as collision avoidance—without delay.
The AxelLiner Advantage
To facilitate this mission, Pale Blue is leveraging AxelLiner Laboratory, a comprehensive service provided by Axelspace that offers end-to-end support for space component demonstration. Rather than Pale Blue needing to build a dedicated satellite to test their engine, Axelspace will integrate the PBH-100 onto a versatile microsatellite bus developed in-house.
AxelLiner Laboratory covers the entire mission lifecycle, including:
- Integration of demonstration equipment.
- Provision of launch opportunities.
- Full operational assistance once in orbit.
This “Space-as-a-Service” model allows component manufacturers like Pale Blue to focus strictly on their technology while relying on Axelspace’s established heritage in bus design and orbital operations.
Deepening Industry Ties
This contract marks a strengthening of ties between the two Japanese space innovators. Pale Blue has previously been involved in the development and manufacturing of thrusters for Axelspace’s own microsatellites. The two companies have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance future collaboration, signaling a robust partnership aimed at bolstering the domestic space supply chain.
Yuya Nakamura, President and CEO of Axelspace, emphasized the collaborative nature of the mission: “We are delighted to announce our agreement with Pale Blue to perform the critical in-orbit demonstration of their compact Hall thruster, executing this technology validation utilizing our proprietary AxelLiner Laboratory platform. By facilitating the rapid path to orbit and offering our extensive expertise—derived from our own experience as a satellite component user—we are actively supporting Pale Blue’s efforts to accelerate their global business expansion.”
Jun Asakawa, Co-Founder and CEO of Pale Blue, echoed these sentiments, noting the strategic importance of the 2027 mission: “We are deeply honored to have signed a demonstration contract with Axelspace for the 2027 in-orbit demonstration of our compact Hall thruster, ‘PBH-100.’ We will validate the product’s key features—high thrust, high specific impulse, and rapid startup performance—in space. Through this demonstration, we aim to further deepen the strong partnership we have built with Axelspace… and contribute to the expansion of the small satellite market.“
About the Companies
Pale Blue is a propulsion innovator founded in 2020 at the University of Tokyo. Specializing in water-based and Hall thruster propulsion systems, the company serves integrators worldwide. They have successfully achieved in-orbit operations multiple times and are currently expanding their production capabilities to meet global demand.
Axelspace Corporation, founded in 2008, is a pioneer in microsatellite technology. Guided by the vision “Space within Your Reach,” the company operates two flagship businesses: AxelLiner, which provides development and operations services, and AxelGlobe, a proprietary Earth observation constellation.
The 2027 mission represents a critical step forward for both entities, validating new hardware for Pale Blue while demonstrating the versatility and reliability of Axelspace’s satellite platforms.
