SUMMARY:How to Win Business from a Telco or MNO
DESCRIPTION:The teleport and satellite industry is making rapid progress toward a significant goal: offering simple integration of satellite connectivity into the networks of terrestrial telecom companies. In past decades\, telcos aggressively deployed automation and virtualization in their networks while the satellite transmission business remained content with considerable human intervention in network operation. The results were incompatibility that could only be overcome with custom engineering and a bad reputation for satellite among telco decision-makers. \nNow\, operators are increasingly adopting terrestrial telecom standards and the operational and business support systems common to telco networks. With 5G promising native compatibility for satellite in mobile networks\, the stage is set for meaningful growth. In this webinar\, WTA shares the experience of teleport and satellite operators and their technology partners that have made the investments necessary to win telco business and the lessons learned about the challenges\, requirements and opportunities.

SUMMARY:Electric Propulsion Qualification Guidelines and Best Practices for NASA Small Spacecraft Missions
DESCRIPTION:Improved capability and miniaturization of spacecraft systems\, along with common use of EELV secondary payload adapters (ESPA) to sell off excess launch capacity\, provides increased opportunity to accomplish scientific\, commercial\, and military space missions at a fraction of historic costs. As such\, ESPA-class and smaller spacecraft (< 500 kg) are rapidly growing in both utility and popularity. However\, they still lack the high delta-v propulsive capabilities currently available in the larger state-of-the-art (SOA) all-electric spacecraft buses. Although recent years have experienced a growth of smallsat electric propulsion (EP) concepts and varying levels of development\, the number of mature and qualified devices remains low.\n\nUnfortunately\, the promise and appeal of small spacecraft are somewhat tempered by significantly higher risks and failure rates associated with minimal expectations for qualification of devices targeting the CubeSat market. A higher level of risk may be perfectly acceptable for some purposes including student learning opportunities\, high-volume commercial concepts\, and new technology demonstrations. However\, for a growing subset of small spacecraft missions — where the scientific data or commercial service from the payload is the primary objective and the small spacecraft is not readily replaceable — a rebalancing of acceptable risk versus cost and schedule is in order. This includes small spacecraft in consideration as secondary payloads on NASA deep space exploration and science missions\, which are typically classified as Small Category 3\, Risk Classification D (cat3/classD) missions; while NASA’s lowest cost and highest risk mission category\, these missions still have a much lower acceptable risk profile than university CubeSats or others flown on NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative.

SUMMARY:Antenna Innovations: The Next Generation
DESCRIPTION:Over recent years\, innovations in satellite ground terminal antennas have had various drivers. Developments in space such as HTS in GEO and emergence of satellites in MEO and LEO have led to some innovations while other innovations have been driven by demand for multi-band/multi-frequency antennas and antennas able to provide satcoms-on-the-move solutions. Even more innovations have been driven by demand for ease of installation\, link budget efficiency\, space and weight saving designs\, and\, not least\, lower cost. \n\nThe antenna environment is one of many technology types\, labelled with various acronyms and abbreviations. For example: the parabolic antenna\, sometimes with complex gimbal mounts; the generically termed Flat Panel Antenna (or FPA)\, which has long offered a niche\, but until recently very expensive\, alternative to parabolic antennas; the Electronically Steered Antenna (ESA)\, the Passive Electronically Scanned Array (PESA)\, and the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) which can radiate multiple beams of radio waves in different directions\, at multiple frequencies\, at the same time.\n\nThis highly dynamic segment of the satcoms sector will be explored by this panel of industry experts who will unravel its current complexities and explain the likely direction of the next and future antenna generations.

SUMMARY:The Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment: Chasing Big Planets with a Small Satellite
DESCRIPTION:NASA Small Spacecraft Systems Virtual Institute’s\nCommunity of Practice Webinar Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on  Wednesday\, April 12\, 2023\, 10:00AM-11:00AM PT for a webinar by Kevin France.\n\nLaboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder\n\n\nAtmospheric escape is a process that affects the structure\, composition\, and evolution of many planets. The signatures of this escape are detectable on close-in\, gaseous exoplanets orbiting bright stars\, owing to the high levels of extreme-ultraviolet irradiance from their nearby parent stars. The Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) is a 6U CubeSat mission designed to take advantage of the near-ultraviolet stellar brightness distribution to conduct a survey of the extended atmospheres of nearby close-in planets. The CUTE payload is a near-ultraviolet (2487 – 3376 Ang) spectrograph fed by a rectangular\, Cassegrain telescope (206 mm x 84mm); the spectrogram is recorded on a back-illuminated\, UV-enhanced CCD. CUTE was launched into a polar\, low-Earth orbit on 27 September 2021 and has been conducting this survey following an on-orbit commissioning period. An overview of the CUTE mission will be presented\, including its motivation and development path. The presentation will conclude with on-orbit science data and observations of excess NUV absorption on short-period planets acquired as part of CUTE’s science program.\n\nS3VI encourages the community to submit questions before the webinar to enable more directed responses. Please send questions to: Craig.D.Burkhard@nasa.gov
