SUMMARY:Ground Segment: All Change for a New Satcoms Era—Featuring Dr. Leslie Klein\, the President & CEO of C-COM
DESCRIPTION:Satellite communications’ ground segment has all too often been considered the less interesting\, non-identical twin\, to the satellites we place into orbit. Launches and the orbiting of spacecraft are “sexy”; outdoor and indoor units on Earth do not have the same visual impact. However\, all this is changing\, and the industry has already coined the name “New Ground” to complement the now quite familiar term “New Space”. \nThe digital divide has become more obvious than ever. The launching of new satellites into various orbits is opening the door to more real-time connectivity\, but all the new connectivity possibilities – from higher frequencies\, lower latency\, higher throughput\, and gain – will only be fully leveraged from automation of networks on the ground and new antennas that can receive and transmit satellite signals efficiently across different satellites and constellations. This webinar will explore the ground segment future. \nDr. Leslie Klein\, the President & CEO of C-COM\, will be one of the featured panelists on Thursday\, November 18 at 3PM GMT / 10AM EST. Free register here.

SUMMARY:New York Space Business Roundtable: ESG – Social Factors of the New Space Economy
DESCRIPTION:Join SSPI Northeast Chapter and New York Space Alliance for the next New York Space Business Roundtable: ESG – Social Factors of the New Space Economy Wednesday\, November 17 at 12 Noon. Click here to register now. \nThis month we explore the “S” in ESG: the social factors informing the the Space and Satellite industry and its impact on finance and industry growth. It would be challenging to find an industry which touches the aspirations of humanity more than the space and satellite industry. But as it becomes more diverse and society takes the turns that we have been taking\, we ask if we are doing enough on the social scale to accommodate this vision of a single planet which is populated by a single humanity? \nAs we navigate questions of culture\, gender\, nationality\, mores and morals\, how should management respond? What is the value of giving so much emphasis to the “S” of Social? What will be the impact on the brand and the overall “health” of companies? Will taking the right steps increase value for investors? Are Social Factors universal? Or are they in themselves a new form of control by a few? Is more nuance needed? \nSSPI and the New York Space Business Roundtable are pleased present the third entry in this regular series. Moderated by Jason Rainbow of SpaceNews our guests include: \n\nSabrina Alam\, Environmental\, Social & Governance (ESG) and Sustainability\, SES Satellites\nRichard Morrison\, Competitive Enterprise Institute\nMore to be announced soon\n\nLearn more and register

SUMMARY:Towards Affordable Terminals: Ironing Out Cost Challenges to Provide High-speed Connectivity
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 16th at Space Tech Expo Europe 2021 \nTerminals play a key role in the future of onboard connectivity. There is tremendous development on flat panel and phased array antennas\, which will ultimately provide faster latency and connectivity and enhance passenger and crew experience. \nHowever\, terminal installation is expensive and does not prove to be cost-effective for many airlines and ship owners. The certification process for new terminals\, as well as lifecycle operations\, maintenance and repair come at a high price – most costs tend to fall to airlines and ship owners. \nEnd-users would need to sell many tickets to pay back the mechanical engineering on vessels and aircraft to justify the solution. Fleet owners would also need to decide on type of antenna for several years – once installed it is not easy to switch. \nDiscussion topics include: \n\nThe cost of antennas and terminals remains high – what can industry do to make this more cost-effective?\nCertification\, installation\, life cycle operations\, maintenance and repair\nThe latest on terminal architecture and solutions: multi-beam\, phased array\, flat panel and developments on high bandwidth/low latency solutions\nHow to decide on a terminal for future use and making sure its technology remains feasible 5-10 years down the line?\n\nSpeakers include: \n\nMatteo Berioli\, Senior Director Connectivity\, SAFRAN Passenger Innovations\nJan Hetland\, Director\, Data Services Division\, Telenor Satellite\nRandall Barney\, Director of Certification & Membership\, World Teleport Association (moderator)

SUMMARY:Smarter Selling in a Virtual World
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 put a stop to most travel\, entertainment\, events and in-person meetings for more than a year\, with only an uncertain end in sight. These have been the lifeblood of sales and customer service for satellite communications since the earliest days of the industry. Virtual meetings made it possible to service existing customers and find opportunities to expand accounts as the pandemic boosted demand for many kinds of communication. But developing new relationships and turning them into opportunities without in-person engagement – that proved a major challenge. The teleport and satellite sectors rose to that challenge in many different ways. In this report\, WTA explores the innovations introduced by forward-thinking companies to turn the hurdles of virtual selling into competitive advantage. The crisis of COVID forced changes and stimulated new thinking that will outlast the end of the pandemic and create efficiencies that will contribute to revenue growth for years to come. This webinar is sponsored by Integrasys. Learn more and register

SUMMARY:SAR-Satellite Remote Sensing for Renewable Power Plants
DESCRIPTION:Renewable energy sources are expected to play a key role in the global push for carbon neutrality. The operation and maintenance (O&M) of renewable power plants is expected to become increasingly important for maintaining stable electricity grids. In this context\, radar satellite-based remote sensing solutions can detect mm level land displacements in the vicinity of renewable power plants. This information can help plant operators detect possible abnormalities in the plant structure and plan corrective O&M actions.

SUMMARY:NASA Conjunction Risk Analysis Guidance
DESCRIPTION:NASA Conjunction Risk Analysis Guidance\n\nby\nJoshua Krage\nNASA Headquarters\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract\nThe rapid growth of the space industry\, and the associated increase in number of objects\, drives new challenges in sustaining a safe environment for all space operators. Managing the risk of a conjunction that might result in a collision with debris or an active object requires awareness\, preparation\, and eventually mitigating action. Conjunctions with other active objects requires coordination to avoid increasing the risk of a collision. NASA has established internal requirements for managing orbital conjunction risk\, and published the “NASA Spacecraft Conjunction Assessment and Collision Avoidance Best Practices Handbook”. This session will cover the NASA best practices and their use by other space operators that might benefit from understanding the technical basis for NASA’s conjunction assessment processes. NASA’s conjunction assessment processes have been developed over the past 30 years\, and may serve to help other space operators in developing their own mature approach.\n\nS3VI encourages the community to submit questions before the webinar to enable more directed responses.
