[SatNews] NovelSat is introducing NovelSat DVB-S2 PLUS, a DVB-S2 backward-compatible alternative to the new DVB-S2X (Digital Video Broadcast S2 Extensions) standard approved by the DVB Project consortium in March, 2014.
DVB-S2X provides, on average, 2.2 percent higher throughput than NovelSat DVBS2 PLUS. Yet unlike DVB-S2X, NovelSat DVB-S2 PLUS, based on the DVB-S2 standard with 5 percent roll-off factor (ROF) is fully backward compatible with the DVB-S2 standard. This is a critical factor for organizations who want to remain standards-based or are looking to use their existing DVB-S2-based IRDs. The DVB-S2X standard features finer MODCOD granularity including higher modulation schemes up to 64APSK, ROF as low as 5 percent compared to 20 percent in DVB-S2 and linear channel modes for use in multi-carrier per transponder configurations. These and other enhancements improve satellite bandwidth efficiency for broadcast by no more than 5 percent on average compared with the DVB-S2 standard. Mostly because of minimal performance improvement and lack of backward compatibility, ASIC vendors have not widely announced support for DVB-S2X chipsets.
NovelSat is committed to supporting all standards including the DVB-S2X standard. However, for standards-minded broadcasters who are considering moving to DVB-S2X, NovelSat recommends upgrading to a version of the new standard, such as NovelSat DVB-S2 PLUS. It is nearly equal in performance to the new DVB-S2X standard and also offers backward-compatibility and a path for future growth. While NovelSat DVB-S2 PLUS is a standards-based solution, NovelSat is better known for NovelSat NS3, the industry’s leading satellite transmission technology since 2011. NovelSat NS3 typically improves spectral efficiency by 40 percent and as much as 62 percent compared with gear based on industry standard DVB-S2 technology and delivers superior resilience to interference and jamming, weather fluctuations and phase noise. NovelSat recently announced that NovelSat NS3 offers the lowest roll-off factor at only 2 percent.
“In fact, the performance benefits and commercial success of NovelSat NS3 were among the main triggers leading to the development of the DVB-S2X standard,“ said Dan Peleg, NovelSat VP R&D.
Although not based on industry standards, NovelSat NS3 can be found in more than 3,000 installations around the world, including in the satellite transmission gear used by some of the largest global broadcasters, communications providers and military bodies.
