Cobham SATCOM has appointed Paul H. Jona as its new Senior Vice President (SVP). Starting March 3, Paul began working alongside incumbent SVP Walther Thygesen. After completing seven years of service as CEO of Thrane & Thrane A/S, and since July 2012 heading up Cobham SATCOM as SVP, Walther has decided to retire from his current duties in June 2014.

Paul is a Dutch national born in Canada. He brings 30 years of experience in tech industries with him and his most recent position was CEO and Chairman of CoActive Technologies in The Netherlands, a US$230M international company with 3,000 employees. Prior to this Paul was Senior Vice President and Corporate Officer of the Cable Systems Group at Amphenol Corporation. The Cable Systems Group had US$300M in revenues and 2,500 employees with global operations. “I’m delighted to be joining Cobham SATCOM and am looking forward to working with Walther during the transition period,” comments Paul. “I’m keen to meet as many partners and staff as quickly as possible, so visiting Satellite 2014 is a great way to start my new journey in this exciting company.” Cobham’s exhibit location is Hall D, stand # 7025.
Paul also brings experience from E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (DuPont) and has during his career lived and worked in the Netherlands, USA, Switzerland, Denmark and Germany.
Paul received his degree in Business Administration from University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, and earned a masters in International Management from the American Graduate School of International Management, Thunderbird, in Arizona.

Cobham Adds A Sailor + THOR To Its Repertoire
Covering the 1 degree West region, THOR 7’s Ka-band capacity is strategically positioned over the main shipping routes in Europe and major oil and gas exploration and production areas, including the North Sea. The THOR 7 Ka-band HTS payload offers 6-9 Gbps throughput with up to 25 simultaneously active spot beams. Services will offer reliable speeds in the tens of Mbps downlink, even from small antennas. Uplink speeds are anywhere from 2Mbps to 6Mbps depending on antenna size. Service reliability is key, with TSBc implementing a package of solutions to mitigate Rain fade on Ka-band, including a new uplink site in Norway to provide antenna site diversity.
“THOR 7’s Ka-band HTS payload has been specifically designed for the mobility VSAT market, offering highly concentrated and high powered coverage over our main market area, including the North Sea, Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea,” comments Julian Crudge, Divisional Director, Datacomms, Telenor Satellite Broadcasting. “The Ka-band HTS payload adds vital growth capacity for our long standing maritime and energy customers and SAILOR antennas will be ready for the start of THOR 7 Ka-band service delivery.”
Cobham SATCOM’s SAILOR 800 VSAT and SAILOR 900 VSAT antennas introduce a new approach to maritime VSAT with uniquely simple procurement and installation in addition to top of the line RF performance. After ordering a complete system with a single part number, SAILOR VSAT antennas leave the factory fully tested and configured, with all RF equipment installed, which simplifies logistics for the service provider and reduces the time needed on board for installation.

Cobham SATCOM + Global Xpress® Unveil + Expand Partners
As a key Cobham SATCOM Cobham SATCOM has announced the forthcoming launch of two new maritime terminals and three new land mobile terminals for Inmarsat’s revolutionary new satellite network at Satellite 2014.
“We’re delighted to announce our new Global Xpress terminals at Satellite 2014. Widely viewed by many as the next generation in the world of maritime and land mobile satcom, Inmarsat’s new network will provide a seamless worldwide broadband service,” says Walther Thygesen, Senior Vice President of Cobham SATCOM. “As an established Inmarsat terminal manufacturer, we are confident in our ability to optimise the use of Global Xpress services for our service provider partners and end-users at sea and on land.”
The new SAILOR 100 GX sports a 103cm reflector dish and is aimed at Cobham SATCOM and Inmarsat’s core global shipping market customers. The compact SAILOR 60 GX features a 65cm reflector dish making it suitable for enabling Global Xpress’ high bandwidth connectivity on a wide range of smaller vessels. The first SAILOR GX terminals will be available during summer 2014, ensuring that Cobham SATCOM’s maritime service provider partners can begin installing the systems on customer vessels for Inmarsat’s commercial service introduction.
“Developed under the famous SAILOR brand, our new maritime GX terminals continue the ‘all-in-one, ready-to-go’ approach we introduced with the SAILOR 900 VSAT antenna, which is delivered with all components installed, configured and tested,” explains Jens Ewerling, Global Business Manager Maritime VSAT, Cobham SATCOM. “The strategy was designed to simplify the often complex maritime VSAT procurement process so it was a natural step to employ it for the launch of Global Xpress to ensure simplicity and high reliability for service providers and ship owners.”
For land-mobile users, Cobham SATCOM is introducing three new Global Xpress terminals to the EXPLORER range, which already features field proven BGAN and Ku-/ Ka-band VSAT terminals. Utilising the same new 75cm 4-segment reflector, EXPLORER 3075GX features a manual point positioner whilst the EXPLORER 5075GX is an Auto-Deploy Fly-Away VSAT solution. Uniquely, both terminals offer integrated Wi-Fi and are all new, highly robust designs, developed 100% in-house. A third Global Xpress antenna for Drive-Away solutions, the EXPLORER 7100GX will also be launched this year. Featuring a 100cm reflector, it is based on the established EXPLORER 7100 VSAT terminal. A Global Xpress field upgrade kit for users of the standard EXPLORER 7100 will be made available.
