Officials with the 2013 International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight (ISPCS), today announced that the second day of the symposium continues with examining risks and rewards for existing platforms for innovation in the space industry like the International Space Station (ISS), the emerging new platforms for innovation like Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo and SpaceX’s Grasshopper.
Building on the presentations and discussions from day one, the second day will examine what the progress of CCDev as well as crew transportation in the shadow of the upcoming Commercial Crew Transportation Capability contract (CCtCap) competition, how the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will balance the facilitation and promotion of the commercial spaceflight industry with the role of regulatory insight, and how the industry as a whole can examine the present to influence the future.
“Creating realistic expectations for improving the systems that get humans and cargo to space must include discussions on risk and related rewards,” said Patricia Hynes, Ph.D., chair of ISPCS. “There are risks in extending the ISS beyond 2020, but there are rewards related to the interdependency of the Commercial Crew and Cargo Programs with ISS. Also, getting the ISS National Lab functioning as a catalyst for commerce in space will increase demands on the new transportation systems and the related regulatory frameworks for the industry. These are big projects that will grow the commercial space market, with some of mankind’s best minds working on them. At ISPCS 2013, those people are not only our speakers, but they are also members of the audience.”
Participants at ISPCS 2013 are the critical thinkers and leaders who clearly understand there are multiple ways and justifications for innovating. Incremental innovations can make an existing products better, cheaper or both and innovations to improve manufacturing or change procurement systems may decrease or at least share risks. Throughout the two day symposium, industry thought leaders will help to clarify where commercial space companies are taking their largest risks and what they are doing to mitigate and share this risk as they begin the implementation phase of their programs.
