The subject of Cybersecurity gets more intense with each passing year, and so it is at this year's CommunicAsia where it will host SatComm, Asia’s largest gathering of satellite communications companies that come together to showcase their latest technology and discuss current and future industry trends and challenges. This year’s event will shine a spotlight on cyber-security in satellite operations.
Forecasts such as Cybersecurity Market Report indicate that worldwide spending will top US$1 trillion for the five-year period from 2017 to 2021, Victor Wong, Project Director for Communications Events at organizer UBM SES remarked that The Internet of Things and its rapid growth has created immense opportunities for satellite and teleport operators, which in turn has created more security risks. He continued that however, satellite solutions remain a reliable and secure way to transmit information and they look forward to seeing the latest technologies their exhibitors will bring to SatComm.
Exhibiting at SatComm will be Eutelsat Communications, a French-based satellite operator. Jean-Francois Fenech, CEO of Eutelsat Asia, remarked that SatComm/CommunicAsia is an invaluable networking platform for Eutelsat, an opportunity to show their solutions for Asia-Pacific and global connectivity, and to take the pulse of the region’s vibrant communications landscape. It’s also a valuable place to discuss emerging trends and challenges in the industry, such as cyber security, and how to address and prepare for these.
In addition to cyber-security technology, other major focus areas at SatComm2017, which will take place May 23-25 on Level 1 of the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, will include satellite solutions that enable upcoming technologies such as 4K or even 8K in Asia and IoT to support smart city developments; the promise of High Throughput Satellites (HTSs) and their commercial value; the LEO-GEO Link and the commercialization of the 78-Satellite constellation; growing VSAT potential and cellular backhaul capabilities; growth opportunities in IoT and M2M Market and how this will revamp the role of the satellite industry; and the role of IP and hybrid networks in the evolution of the satellite industry.
Newtec, a designer, developer and manufacturer of equipment and technologies for satellite communications that is has exhibited at CommunicAsia for decades, will be in attendance. The company’s CEO Thomas Van den Driessche will participate in a key panel session moderated by Northern Sky Research (NSR) that will discuss HTS opportunities across Asia-Pacific and how operators can take advantage of them.
Van den Driessche commented that SatComm provides them with the opportunity to meet with industry leaders from not just the Asia-Pacific region, but from all over the globe. There is something new and exciting to look forward to every year, especially the panel discussions where Newtec has been asked to discuss important industry trends and challenges. He added that they are looking forward to this year’s event and demonstrating what Newtec can offer the industry.
